The Tilikum Crossing, Portland’s first new bridge across the Willamette River in 42 years, provides access to only transit, bicycles and pedestrians, marking a new era in transportation.
Recognizing the significance of this iconic span, TriMet asked Mayer/Reed to create its signature identity piece and an interpretive program that honors the bridge’s place in modern history, as the only bridge of its kind in the US.
The faceted stainless steel signature creates shifting patterns of light and shadow on the bridge towers. A faceted pattern carries through the 8 interpretive panels, providing a tactile experience along the railing in harmony with the bridge’s design.
