Mayer/Reed led the 2nd generation update of Sound Transit’s bus, light rail and commute rail signage design standards. Analysis of three key stations representing the range of application challenges informed our strategy to improve message clarity, comply with ADA updates, and simplify material and sign components while maintaining design elements that have equity with transit users. Working with an interagency stakeholder group, the design team led meetings to build consensus for updates to station identification, transit information, platform signage, wayfinding, highway and temporary signage which spans multiple jurisdictions and partner agency sites. The design standards update and manual reorganization facilitated improved usability by consultant teams and for Sound Transit’s construction management, customer service, and maintenance staff.
