The Walk of the Heroines is a special place on the PSU campus that honors women who have illuminated our lives. As an innovative extension of the Women’s Studies program, names of these distinctive women are featured on a series of graceful, curved stone walls in this educational garden. Stories of their achievements are accessed through an interactive kiosk on site.
Mayer/Reed’s design process entailed several intensive workshops to work with faculty, students and community representatives who examined the goals and purpose of the project. The firm explored choreography of how the space is sequenced and experienced and concepts that coalesce many universal design themes of women. A vertical column of water falling into an interactive cobbled pool is the ultimate focal point of the Walk, while an elevated stage provides a venue for events. Works of public art are integrated into the walls, seating areas and paving. Expressive and sometimes humorous quotes from women authors are carved in granite paving bands. Granite benches and colorful seasonal gardens provide an invitation to spend time in the space. Over many years, Mayer/Reed assisted the PSU Foundation in fund-raising efforts through presentations, promotional events, renderings and other descriptive materials.
