Perched on a hill with stunning views of Portland, the historic Pittock Mansion Museum turned 100 in 2014. In anticipation of the home’s centennial, the Pittock Mansion Society in partnership with Portland Parks & Recreation commissioned Mayer/Reed to design an interior and exterior wayfinding system to reflect the updated Pittock Mansion brand.
To build excitement for the experience ahead, a series of Burma Shave style trail blazer signs greet visitors along the arrival drive with historic facts about the mansion and the prominent family who lived there. These bright blue circular signs are capped with a pineapple finial inspired by the home’s architectural details. The design carries forward on interpretive site map and pedestrian wayfinding signs which provide a self-guided tour of the grounds including the gate house, overlook and gardens. Subtle interior directional signage meets State Historic Preservation requirements and complements the mansion interior to provide wayfinding without distracting from the historic architecture and exhibits.
