Kinetic DeLight at the Portland Winter Light Festival
“Kinetic De Light” is a temporary public installation designed to brighten winter nights during the 2019 Portland Winter Light Festival. Each year, the citywide festival invites the community to come together to marvel at the illuminated creations of design firms and artists. Overlooking the Willamette River on the industrial east side of the Tilikum Crossing bridge, Mayer/Reed’s “Kinetic De Light” was a delight for all—reflecting the energy of those who touched it. Made of over 700 kinetically powered LED skateboard wheels, it ebbed and flowed with patterns and randomness as festival goers joyfully spun light. With a touch of the hand, illumination spun from one wheel to another, eventually fading like a comet across the dark, cold night.
