The Hans Rosling Center for Population Health is home to the University of Washington’s Population Health Initiative (PHI), a hub for researchers and faculty to collaborate on the most persistent and emerging challenges affecting human health. In addition to designing signage and wayfinding, Mayer/Reed developed storytelling elements that permeate the 300,000 sf building offering moments of education, discovery and inspiration in support of the PHI mission. Two-story high feature walls composed of over 1,800 wood blocks greet visitors in the lobbies. Many blocks are inscribed with a positive influence or improvement in health, with oldest influences on the bottom blocks, ascending to aspirational blocks at the top. Along the main floor, a 55-foot-long exhibit with integrated video introduces the mission. Quotes from namesake doctor, statistician, author and professor, Hans Rosling, grace the walls throughout. We translated Rosling’s data visualizations into colorful stairwell graphics and monochromatic wayfinding patterns in the gathering spaces of corresponding floors. QR codes allow visitors to link to live infographics and explore the data behind the graphics.
