As part of a multidisciplinary team, Mayer/Reed provided landscape architecture services for the comprehensive redesign of downtown Portland’s Lincoln High School campus. A unique feature of the redesign is the Teen Parent Center, a dedicated space situated away from the main academic building. Its placement is carefully considered to minimize the stigma often associated with teen parenting, while still ensuring convenient access for parents to visit their children during the school day. Nestled into a hillside, the center offers a nature-inspired retreat that blends indoor and outdoor spaces for a comforting, playful environment.
The design incorporates trauma-informed principles, with an emphasis on creating connections to nature. The building’s green roof and indoor-outdoor adjacencies infuse natural elements into the urban setting. Mayer/Reed’s design of the outdoor play space encourages interaction and exploration. True to the creative concept for the campus as a whole, the landscape architecture for the teen parent center draws inspiration from Tanner Creek which historically flowed through the site. Here the theme is expressed with oversized “pebble” shapes in the entryway concrete and in the terrain features of the play area. Turf play hills and colorful rubber surfacing use organic, round shapes, which are also featured in the interior flooring. A slope planted with native vegetation provides verdant views beyond the play yard.
