The Hyatt Regency Portland, at the Oregon Convention Center is a $220 million 600-room hotel designed to accommodate convention center visitors. As the landscape architect for the hotel and adjacent 442 space parking garage, Mayer/Reed designed a sequence of active ground level experiences surrounding the hotel frontages and civic space as well as a private outdoor terrace at the clubhouse level. Throughout the site, abundant plantings and richly textured materials create a contemporary aesthetic for this high-profile destination. Custom reclaimed hardwood and stained concrete seating integrate with the layered landscape planters and adapt to the grade changes. Sculptural seating elements of honed local stone punctuate the landscape like giant pebbles. A sunny corner plaza fronts the southeast hotel lobby entry and provides clear pedestrian circulation to light rail, two major transportation corridors and the Oregon Convention Center plaza. Custom steel landscape planters and trellised climbing plants enclose an elevated outdoor dining terrace that is distinct from the active public spaces along its edges. The southwest building entry features a covered walkway, or loggia, custom cantilevered precast benches and pedestrian connections to the adjacent parking garage, bike storage facilities and convention center. A cascading sequence of vegetated rain gardens treats stormwater collected from the ballroom roof. LEED Gold certified.
