As part of a major renovation of the Oregon Convention Center, Mayer/Reed designed plazas, streetscape and site signage for an enhanced visitor experience within the public realm.
Designed to interface with the new 600-room hotel across Holladay Street, the northeast flexible-use plaza and hospitality terrace invite visitors to enjoy events and casual gatherings amidst a mix of Oregon landscape typologies. The contemporary design utilizes basalt stone, weathering steel, wood and informal plantings.
The streetscape along MLK Jr. Blvd incorporates sequential wayfinding cues to guide visitors to the main entry plaza. A rainwater garden and identity pylon anchor the main entrance. With weathering steel juxtaposed on a translucent luminous blade, the identity pylon features the convention center logo and an incorporated digital display.
Completed in October 2019, the design is part of a $27 million project to update the interior and exterior of the convention center.
