The Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Gateway and Heritage Markers creates a district gateway to strengthen the area’s identity, share its history and provide a space of civic pride in the historically African-American neighborhood. Throughout Portland’s history, this area has experienced dramatic physical and social changes, including the impacts of the Great Depression, World War II, the Vanport flood, the Civil Rights Movement and urban renewal. Mayer/Reed developed interpretive elements to support Knot Studio’s (formerly 2.ink) design of a gathering space in which to begin a civic dialogue about these stories. The gateway’s internally-illuminated perforated metal scrim walls support quotes by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Within the plaza, four 20-foot pylons incorporate interpretive stories. Stencil-cut inscriptions at the top of each pylon identify themes of Community, Civil Rights, Immigration & Migration, and Commerce & Culture.
