The Civic & The Morrison – Urban ResidentialPortland, Oregon
Two buildings comprise this urban mixed-use development consisting of a 16-story condominium tower, the Civic, and 45 units of low-income apartments with ground-floor retail at The Morrison. Adding to the thriving, contemporary urban environment near Providence Park, Mayer/Reed designed a pedestrian street between the buildings where outdoor café terraces attract both visitors and residents.
An urban bioswale that treats stormwater runoff forms the central spine of the pedestrian street. The spine links a recirculating water feature, verdant shade plantings and a series of stainless steel sculptures by Lee Kelly. Lighting suspended across the street further invigorates the space at night. Apartment residents at The Morrison overlook the street life below from an elevated roof garden. On top, the apartment building has a low-maintenance eco-roof planted with colorful sedum.
