The MAX Orange Line, TriMet’s new 7.3 mile light rail, extends between downtown Portland, Oregon into Clackamas County. Throughout the length, elements of continuity help tie the line together and provide a station experience that is safe, user-friendly and predictable; while elements of distinction reflect the context of each station ranging from undeveloped urban industrial brownfields to suburban residential communities.
As the lead urban designers for the East Segment, Mayer/Reed’s work creates pedestrian and bike connections with distinctive character for each station. Design of public spaces reflect and respond to each neighborhood and geographic setting. Elements of distinction include paving, railings, retaining walls, lighting, seating and incorporation of public art. Design of the Trolley Trail and other pedestrian and bike improvements enable choices for multi-modal transportation links. The firm collaborated with other design and engineering firms to incorporate architectural and landscape elements, bridges, public art and environmental restoration.
